Living Workspace, Zurich

Project overview

An existing office building at Talstrasse 41 in Zurich underwent extensive modernisation. The aim was to integrate a high-quality climate ceiling solution into the first two upper floors, ensuring both energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal. Particular attention was paid to combining powerful cooling, efficient air flow and a discreet appearance.

Planning Challenge

The new ceilings had to blend seamlessly into the existing architecture while also noticeably improving the indoor climate. High thermal performance, acoustic efficacy, and the least noticeable feasible integration of the air outlets were among the requirements.

Technical Solution

With the closed A11-C climate ceiling system and the VENTAMIC hybrid system, a solution was chosen that combines high heating and cooling performance with integrated supply air. It is also essentially silent and undetectable.

All floors have a consistent ceiling appearance since the ceiling panels are visually in line with the existing characteristics.

The use of the full-surface VENTAMIC hybrid system optimally integrates the building mass into the overall energy concept.

The system has a cooling capacity of up to 119 W/m2 at a temperature differential of 8 K and a heating capacity of up to 104 W/m2 at a temperature differential of 15 K, demonstrating remarkable technological prowess. With a sound absorption coefficient of up to αw 0.90, the acoustic properties achieve sound absorption class A. Depending on the design, the air volume is up to 80 m³/h per linear metre of supply air outlet at a sound pressure level below 38 decibels.

Freecooling

Despite this high performance, the installation height remains extremely compact at 250 millimetres. At night, the system – often in free cooling mode – can extract the temporarily stored heat energy from the building mass, thus preconditioning the building mass for the next day.

Result

Employees benefit from a pleasant indoor climate that offers maximum comfort in both summer and winter – while also ensuring efficient energy use.

An air-handling ceiling system that combines powerful cooling, built-in supply airflow and high levels of thermal comfort – for comfortable working environments at Talstrasse 41 in Zurich.
